One Good Thing: Letterpress Stamped Cookies

I spotted this delicious recipe for Chocolate Dipped Lemon Sugar Cookies last week on With Style and Substance blog and fell in love with Tara's clever idea of imprinting cookies with a number or letter from a vintage letterpress block. Such a chic graphic look. It would work perfectly for a birthday party or maybe even a New Years celebration — stamp cookies with one of each number 2-0-1-1 and line them up on a pretty serving tray for guests to nibble on (for an added festive bonus you might even dress them up with a bit of Luster Dust in gold and silver). UPDATE: Please read the comment by reader Pxp below stating the possible dangers of imprinting food items with print blocks.

The vintage number letterpress blocks shown above are from AM Radio - they might be a tad large for this project, but they are always getting interesting things in so be sure to take a look around their shop. Alternately you can browse around on etsy (tip: try searching under the vintage category using the search term "letterpress printing blocks") for some creative options. xo Ez

fun!!!
my son and i made sugar cookie 'fossils' - an idea form Martha Stewart. we used plastic bugs and animals to make the imprints in the cookies. instant fossils! it was a lot of fun. but this is a great idea for me to do for his preschool class - thanks, Ez!

As a printmaker, I'm really hesitant to endorse a home craft like this unless the wood type is brand new.

vintage wood type travels a lot--shares its long life storage with lead type, is often used on presses that also use lead type, handled by printers who also handle lead type, etc.

I would never imprint food products with anything in so much contact with lead.

Oh goodness! Thank you so much for your comment Pxp! I would have never know this (as I have no knowledge about actual printmaking). I really appreciate you sharing this with us.

Typorgaphy + baking... 2 of my favorite things! Already have the wheels turning on how I can turn this into a holiday project!

Could you wrap the letterpress block in some plastic wrap and then imprint? Just an idea.

What a wonderful idea ! Also love Alexandras' (and Marthas') suggestion. Time to put those toy insects that keep popping up unexpectedly everywhere to some good use.

Typography and cookies - utter genius. If there had been more of this at school I'd have paid more interest to home economics.

I must try this for our next party. I guess a thorough cleaning is in order before it touches the dough.

Some people are just too creative! I bet she's a great designer. What a fabulous brilliant mind.

PXP is right. Only do this if you think your diet doesn't include enough lead. Vintage type is filthy, filthy stuff.
