In My Studio: Party Invitation Design Process
A dear friend of mine asked if I'd be interested in designing the invites for her daughter's 2nd birthday / pool party. What a fun assignment! So I thought that today I'd share a little sneak peek with you of the behind the scenes process that's been underway here in my studio.
Step 1: My process first starts with sketching out some rough ideas.
Step 2: When I figure out which direction I like best, I finalize the design and scan it into my computer.
Step 4: Using watercolor, colored pencils, and acrylic paint I create textures to be scanned into my computer.
Step 5: Now the fun continues as I begin playing around with all the various design elements in Photoshop.
The design isn't finished yet, but I'm pretty happy with the direction it's going so far (hooray). Stay tuned for the final design...hopefully I'll be able to share that with you all sometime next week.
Have an awesome weekend everyone. I'll be away on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday (here in the US), so I'll see you on Tuesday! xo Ez

It's very interesting to know the process you follow to do the design!!
Process is my favorite to see. And what an adorable lil bear.
Thanks for sharing! I'm excited to see what you come up with in the end.
wow, that is so cool! i had no idea that watercolours were part of your design process/inspiration... and i just realized i could probably use them to iron out my colourboards (rather than using pencil crayons). hooray!
(oh, and those designs are absolutely adorable....what a lucky kiddo!)
Love this! So cute!
I wouldn't want to give your (super lucky) friend any ideas but I think you just booked yourself a yearly commitment :) PS. I love how you say it's not finished yet coz it's absolutely perfect as is!!!!
I have been playing around with watercolors. It is great to see a behind the scenes of one of your illustrations. Thanks for sharing!
So adorable! And I completely agree with Marichelle that it looks perfect as-is! xo Laura
I totally love the invitation as is! Could it be better?!
Thanks for your blog - it is one of the few that I don't miss reading daily and always look forward to :) I'm so glad that I stumbled upon it.
Loving it so far! Ever-inspiring Ez :)
Thanks so much for sharing! It is always nice to see what other designers are doing and to see their creative process! Iron sharpens iron! Keep up the gorgeous work!
i love that you shared this process--so cool!
those are darling invites.
do you work in Photoshop exclusively or with InDesign?
Adorable! It's making me feel all smiley inside. And I too appreciate seeing the design process.
Hi Ez, you have pique my curiosity... I wish to know if possible, if you trace the sketch onto the tracing paper before scanning or do you actually use tracing paper to sandwich between the sketch and the scanner in order for a softer look? I am always wondering how did you achieve all the dreamlike texture. I am sure you did not do too much touch up to your originals... the latter are usually at their best even before the PS! :)
*in order to create a softer look?
I looooooove it! I KNEW I knew what it was for! :) Boy, I sure hope I get invited....;)
xoxo
