Souvenir Foto School: Day 22 - L for Lemons into Lemonade

I was excited for today's Souvenir Foto School assignment because it finally gave me the chance to use my chalkboard painted prop table that I made a while ago. I have used it in other shots before, but until now, I never had chalk on hand to actually use it to its full potential. So hooray!
For some reason I find yellow very difficult to photograph. I'm not sure if that's just my issue, or something that is common, but it always seems to get really blown out and loses a lot of it's depth if you expose the rest of the scene properly. Anyhow, I think these photos turned out well enough, and now I'm going to go sip my lemonade! It's nearly 70 degrees here today!
Oh, and I also think that it's worth mentioning, that I took 176 photos for this assignment in order to end up with the two you see here. I think it can be easy to assume (at least for me it can be) that every pretty picture we see online or in magazines just pops out the of the photographer's camera without a lot of trial and error...but at least for me, that is certainly not the case. So if you're just getting into photography, or struggling to capture things exactly how you want to, just keep at it. There is nothing wrong with taking however many shots you need to get it right. You'll learn more and more each time, and eventually you'll be taking far fewer photos, but ending up with a lot more images that you are happy with straight out of the camera. I used to take about 400+ for a simple set-up like this. So maybe I'm getting there too! xo Ez

Beautiful photos! It's so true what you say about having to take lots of photos to get a few perfect shots. I have found my photography has improved by taking endless photos at different angles etc and seeing what works (I cringe at some of my past photography) but I still have a long way to go! Thanks for the lovely images!

Oooh this is my fave so far in your series. I love it...I will leave it at that because I could babble on about all the things I love about it. Nice to hear you are getting great shots from simple standar equipment too. Nice use of the 18-200 lens! I do highly recommend my Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens. It s joy to work with and can't believe I waited so long to buy one. ;-)
LOVE the black board paint table. I've been thinking about doing one as well for my new food site. Great idea and the lemons look amazing on black.

Lovely! Thanks so much for including the bit about how many shots you take - it's such a nice (clear) reminder that you're good at what you do because you work at it. A nice counter to people thinking blogging or photography, etc., are just about "having it." Although of course you have some "it," I really admire how hard you work to expand and improve "it." :)
Such beautiful pictures! I also tend to think that other photographers only take a few pictures that all turn out great so it's really nice to be reminded that that's not always the case. The photographer Scott Kelby is really good with pointing that out and he sometimes show the-not-so-great shots on his blog. It's uplifting for a beginner like myself to know that even the pros doesn't always get it right all the time. And I agree that exposure is difficult, I'm not there yet so I shoot RAW and fix it postprocessing. Hopefully, someday I'll get there :)
