Reader Question: What Shoes Do I Wear With This Dress?

Today I wanted to try my hand at answering a question sent in by reader Kim.  I'm certainly not an expert so I'd love to hear all of your ideas too.  Let's see if we can help Kim with her dilemma.  Here's her email query: "I just recently bought this dress and I can't seem to find any cute shoes to go with it! I hate having it hang in my closet because I have no shoes to wear with it.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!"

What do you think?  What shoes would you wear with the dress?  Leave your suggestions for Kim in the comment section below.

DRESS IT DOWN - Look for low profile shoes in basic materials such as leather, suede, and cotton/linen.  Stay away from bulky shoes, patterns that conflict with the dress, or overly-embellished looks).

DRESS IT UP - Because the style of this dress is relaxed, you don't want to go overboard with the fanciness of your shoe.  I recommend something that is classic and understated or summery and sweet (think wedges).  Make it interesting by choosing a complimentary color (such as the teal green - picking up on one of the subtler colors from the dress).

I pretty much agree with you. I'll probably pick the ballet flats and the wedges to go with the dress. I think cowboy boots will complete the look perfectly too!

i would always go with ballet flats. but that's because i tend to break my ankles when i wear heels. :) although those blue ones are gorgeous...

little red sandals to dress down, and the teal/blue ones to dress it up, no black at all..

I'd vote for the ballet flats or the t-strap. Or maybe a pair of cowboy boots! How fun would that be!?

Ohh, I know I may be wandering into unkind waters here but I am a professional at this so I hope these remarks can be received as such:

Never, ever wear plaids on the widest part of you unless you are just stick thin.

Having said that, and being pretty trim, I would not worry about the shoes. The dress is a cute idea and a nice shape but I wish it were in a no-pattern-pattern or a fun solid color with which you could opt for a contrasty bright shoe and or a wide, fun belt of the new school... Fire away.

either pair of sandals worked for me.but to play up the plaid of the dress, may i suggest a pair of Frye short boots?

I love the red sandals for summer and the black ballet flats for fall.

Those are great picks! Love the red sandals. I would totally kick a pair of classic Converse with this dress. I also like the cowboy boots suggestion above.

Hey Creature Comforts! Thank you so much for involving ModCloth into your blog. I really like the black flats with this tunic. :)

great choices, all of them, but my fave is the strappy little number from GAP followed by the black ballet flat.

I love the strappy wedges - they're just dressy enough without going overboard.

I personally have those exact Old Navy shoes and don't have anything nearly as daring to wear them with. So I say go for those! : )
