Real Review: Screw Punch Tool

I thought it would be cool to review real purchases of mine on here from time to time.  I'm not compensated in any way for my opinions (or for any of my posts for that matter), so this (and others) will always be "real reviews."  Hope they will be fun an informative for you all.

Anyhow... the nerdy crafter in me has compelled me to share the most awesome new tool with you.  I just picked up this Screw Punch from Martha Stewart's craft line at Michael's yesterday and have since discovered that it will punch a perfect hole through paper, card stock, cardboard and even fabric!  For fun I punched a random design through a colored envelope (the color of the note card peeks through the holes)... and then did a sample punch in some linen that I had laying around.  If you've ever tried to get a perfect tiny hole in fabric without one of these tools, then you can probably appreciate my excitement.

This punch comes with three different bits (the part that punches the holes) and they store neatly inside the handle.  When using this you will want to be sure to work on a self-healing cutting mat so that you don't mess up your work table.

At almost $25 this tool is pricier than I would normally want to pay, but I found a 20% off coupon in a current magazine, so it made purchasing it doable.  In all I'd give this tool 9 out of 10 stars. Other screw punches can be found at the following shops:

Cool! Does it set eyelets as well? It reminds of the the eyelet setter I have stashed away and haven't used in ages. I might have to pull it out and try this! Love how you made the design- very clever!

I have this at home and I like it too! I was able to use it on chipboard, also. It takes a few tries when going through thick chipboard, but it turned out really nice!

Mmm, maybe mine's defective (or perhaps operator error?), because I'm not as enchanted with mine. I have another screw punch I bought for book binding that cuts through stuff like buttah. Of course it's MIA right now so I picked up the Martha punch figuring I'd have a spare. Paper works fine, but it never made it all the way through chipboard, even after several tries. I absolutely love the design you made!

I'm glad to hear that you had success with a MS tool. I bought the circle cutter from Wal-Mart -- which was lovely until all three of the blades that came with it broke or dulled in a very short time! I still use the circle guide to draw circles, though.

Nice! This makes me yearn for one of those (sort of silly) Cricut machines. I can't really stomach the price nor the idea of being forced to use their designs. But, the idea of having my own desktop scribe machine is SO tempting.

Hi Autumn! I have a Cricut cutting machine. In hindsight it was probably not worth the cost... but it is pretty cool what it can do. If I can ever get my act together I will make some fun embellishments with it for my shop. : )xoEz

This does seem similar to an eyelet setter, but alas this only cuts out holes. ; )

That's a cool tool Ez! Thanks for sharing :)

You made my day! I am always looking for ways to make my own stencils and this definitely helps. This would also be great for punching holes to use brads in any place on a card. With a lot of punches you can only go so deep.

I have been wanting to get one of these for awhile. I wonder if you can use the 40 or 50% off coupon for a MS product?

Yippee! I was so excited to read this post - I totally NEED one of these.

Thanks so much for reviewing this! I've been eying this screw punch for awhile, but hesitated to buy it because I was nervous about spending that kind of money on a "new" design. I'm so excited to see how well it puts holes in fabric! I'm definitely keeping my eyes open for my next coupon in the mail! Thanks!

I've always wondered about those! Glad to see your review.

This would be great as a card or invitation.
Geez..almost $25? I almost bought this the other day for $30! The only reason I didn't was I didn't come prepared with $3o, when I had just come to grab a grommet kit. And when I came back two days later, all three in stock were sold. I was bummed. Reading the comments here, though, not sure it would have worked for me, anyway...I needed to punch a grommet hole through two layers of twill and a layer of grosgrain ribbon. And possibly something else in the middle, but I hadn't sewn that part. :p What's this bookbinding screw punch being mentioned, and where the heck do I get one?
