Today I am delighted to team up with HomeMint to share three simple DIY home decor tutorials with you. My goal was to captures the essence of what HomeMint is all about...expressing your unique personal style through the objects you choose to surround yourself with in your home. So with that in mind I created three very easy ways to dress up a standard throw pillow that will make it truly yours!
For these projects you will need cotton or cotton-blend throw pillows in whatever color(s) you like. The linen ones I had were already printed on one side, so by adding these DIY elements to the backside of each I was able to create accent pieces that will perform double duty! Score!
Triangle Pillow Supplies:
- Wool Felt — You will need 1/4 yard or less per pillow
- Permanent Fabric Glue — I recommend Aleene's Fabric Fusion
- Fabric Scissors OR
- Rotary Cutting Tool
- Self-healing Mat — for use with rotary cutter
- Ruler
- 2.5" Square Template — download will begin as soon as you click on the link
- Scrap paper

1. If using a rotary cutting tool, you will want to work on top of a self-healing mat. Cut your wool felt into long strips that are 2.5" wide. Then use your template to cut your strips into even squares (it's important that they are even). You will need nine squares for the pillow design shown here, but you may need more or less depending the design you make.
2. Once you have finished cutting your squares, place your ruler through the middle of one square, lining it up against both points.

3. Cut all your squares in half from point to point.
4. Set triangles aside.

5. This is the fun part! Play around with your triangles and create a graphic pattern on your pillow that you love. There are endless options to choose from! Leave your final design set up on your pillow to aid with the next step.

6. Working on top of your scrap piece of paper, apply fabric glue to the back of one of your triangles. Be sure to get glue along the very edge and points of the shape, and follow any special manufactuer directions listed on the glue bottle.
7. Apply your glued triangle to your pillow and gently press it into place. Make sure to adhere it along the edges and points. Tip: I recommend starting your gluing process in one corner of your pillow / design and working your way in rows until your design is complete.
Admire your pillow!
Pom Pom Pillow Supplies:
- Soft Yarn — softer yarns create puffier pom poms | I used Vanna's Choice Baby Yarn in Goldfish
- Embroidery Floss — choose a color that closely matches your yarn color
- Embroidery Needle
- Fabric Scissors
First you're going to want to start by making four pom poms. You can watch a quick video tutorial that I created for some super simple pom poms right here:
Make your pom poms any color and size that you'd like.

1. Thread and knot your needle with embroidery floss. Begin by sewing through the center of your pom pom until the knot is buried inside. Stitch back through the opposite way and pull tight. Stitch forward and back through the pom pom two more times to make sure that it is secure. You should now have a pom pom firmly attached to the end of your threaded needle.
2. Use your needle to stitch through one corner of your pillow. Pull your thread through until your pom pom is taught against the pillow.

4. Stitch back through the pom pom and pull your thread tight.
5. Continue to stitch forward and back through your pom pom, passing through the fabric on the edge of your pillow several times as you go.

6. Once the pom pom is securely attached. Tightly double (or triple) knot your thread. Try to do this as close to the corner of your pillow as you can so that it is hidden underneath the pom pom.
7. One down! Now repeat this process on the remaining three corners. You can even add pom poms all the way around the edge of your pillow if you feel adventurous!
Ogle your new pillow!
Painterly Striped Pillow Supplies:
- Fabric Paint in any color you'd like. I used Tulip Soft® Fabric Paint in Matte Ebony
- Coarse Paintbrush in whatever width you'd like your stripes to be. You will have a bit more control over a narrower brush like the one I used.
- Paint Palette or container to hold paint

1. Pour a small amount of paint onto your paint palette and dip your brush into it.
2. Paint stripes across your pillow. For the best results, I painted by brush fully across the width of my pillow in one solid stripe (even though the paint became very thin) and then went back over areas with my brush for a nice painterly effect. You can paint as many or as few stripes as you'd like. Let the paint dry.
Pat yourself on the back! You made another awesome pillow!
